Honeydew

General Information

Honeydew melons are considered the sweetest of all melons.  One serving (3/4 cup diced) of honeydew melon provides an excellent source of vitamin C (45% of daily value) and vitamin A and provides 50 calories of nutritious energy.

Selection and Storage

Good-quality honeydew melons will turn a creamy yellow color and the skin will have a slightly waxy feel when ripe.  They will be firm with a small amount of softness at the stem.

Preparation and Cooking

It is suggested that you wash melons thoroughly before slicing. The easiest way is to cut it in half or quarters (depending on the size), remove the seeds in the portion you plan to eat, then scoop out the flesh with a teaspoon.  Refrigerate melons only if they become too ripe or have been cut.

Popular Varieties

The honeydew has a smooth, firm pale cornflower colored skin that encases sweet, pale green flesh.  Round to oval and somewhat larger than a cantaloupe, this melon's skin turns from green to white to yellow as it matures.
