General Information

The luscious and amazingly versatile apple is an Americam favorite.  With over 500 varieties, you can easily find the best apple to fit your needs year round.  The top varieties include: Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Gala, McIntosh and Granny Smith.

Selection and Storage

Look for firm apples with good color. Store in the crisper of your refrigerator.

Preparation and Cooking 

Apples are portable and easy to eat on the go.  Pack in lunches, whip up apple slices for an after school snack and use apples in salads, main dishes and desserts.  Always wash before serving.

Popular Varieties

Golden delicious apples have a yellow to yellow-green color and may have a lightly freckled appearance.  This apple variety is one of the favored varieties for cooking, because it has a mild sweetness that holds up to high cooking temperatures.

Red delicious apples are currently grown in all areas of the United States except the South.  Their popularity is enhanced by attractive dark red color with a flesh that is sweet and juicy.  These are excellent for eating and salads. 

Gala's size, mellow flavor and thin skin make them a perfect choice for kids.

McIntosh apples are sweet with a tart tang.  McIntosh apples grow particularly well in New York's cool climate and are generally available between September and June.

Granny Smith apples are cripsy, juicy and tart which makes them perfect for either baking in pies, stewed in sauces or eating out of hand. They are also great in salads, because once they are cut, they keep their color longer than other apples.
